Thailand Tsunami

The Thailand Tsunami refers to a devastating natural disaster that struck the coast of Thailand, particularly affecting the region of Phuket and the Andaman Sea area, on December 26, 2004. This tsunami was caused by a massive undersea earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale, which occurred off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The resulting waves reached heights of up to 30 meters (about 100 feet) and inundated coastal communities, resulting in significant loss of life, property, and economic impact. The disaster killed over 8,000 people in Thailand, many of whom were tourists, and displaced thousands more. It also caused extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods in affected regions. The event prompted an international humanitarian response and led to improvements in tsunami warning systems and disaster preparedness in the Indian Ocean region.
